Clearing agents threaten strike action over terminal operator’s charges

The
Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) and the National
Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) has issued a joint press statement threatening a strike action should some port
charges remain unchanged.

The state
was signed by Prince Olaiyiwola Shittu, National President of ANLCA, and Dr
Eugene Nweke, National President of NAGAFF, in Lagos.
They
described as ‘illegal’ some charges by terminal operators, the Standards
Organisation of Nigeria(SON) Nigerian Quarantine Services and the shipping
companies.
“We shall
not fold our arms as illegal charges are being constantly foisted on hapless
Nigerians.
“ It is an
affront and a denial of our livelihood as more cargoes are being diverted daily
to neighbouring countries.
“We are convening
a meeting by next week Wednesday to get the go-ahead to withdraw our services nationwide,
in protest against these charges,” the statement read in part.
While they
called on the government to intervene to avoid the action paralyzing the
nation’s ports and consequently, the economy, they said the Nigeria Shippers’
Council was not allowed to do its duty.
“The action
is capable of arm-twisting and rendering impotent, the Nigeria Shippers’ Council
(NSC) as commercial regulator of the industry,” it said.

They added
that such action against the NSC was bent on frustrating the efforts of the
council at reducing the cost of doing business in Nigerian ports.
