NPA to collaborate with engineering body on professionalism, says MD

 The Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA)Malam Habib
Abdullahi, on Friday said that the Authority would collaborate with the
Nigerian Society of Engineers and other Institutions to ensure maintenance of
professionalism.
This was contained in a statement by the Assistant General
Manager, Public Affairs of the NPA,Mr Musa Iliya.
The statement said that the collaborative effort for
professionalism would ensure the engineering curriculum of such institutions
had relevant industry-based specialisation.
Abdullahi was quoted to have stated this while receiving a
delegation of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Lagos state branch which
paid him a courtesy visit in his office on March 24.

Represented by the Executive Director, Marine and Operations,
Engr. David Omonibeke, the Managing Director noted that there were many
unemployed engineering graduates due to lack of relevant industry skills
required.
 Omonibeke told the delegation that any young engineering
graduate with the necessary skill does not need any godfather to secure
employment.
He said that the Authority would soon establish a Maritime Safety
Centre for the training of Pilots and other personnel in the fire service.
On request for assistance to complete the branch
Secretariat/Library complex, earlier made by the leader of the delegation,
Engr. Oludayo Oluyemi, Omonibeke said the NPA had a Corporate Social
Responsibility policy for host communities.
 He said  that their request had been noted in view of
the pivotal roles engineers played in infrastructure development in the
maritime sector.
On the roles of the Authority’s engineers, the General Manager,
Maintenance, Engr. Peter Obinomen, said that they have been involved  in
capital and maintenance dredging of the channels, quay wall and fenders
construction.
He said they had also done installation of navigational aids like
buoys, moles and breakwater works, roads and rail networks within the port and
other marine engineering that deals with water front infrastructure.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Engr. Oluyemi
 commended the NPA for its roles in the Nigerian economy and for providing
their colleagues with gainful employment.
He added that the Authority was identified as one of the biggest
employer of Engineers in the country.
He informed the representative of the Managing Director that the
society would hold its Annual General Meeting in Akure in November this year
and that the NPA was invited to grace the occasion.
