regulatory agency, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency
(NIMASA).

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina,
who announced the termination of Akpobolokemi’s appointment in a
statement made available to journalists, however, did not give reason for
the decision, which, according to him, took immediate effect.
“Akpobolokemi is to hand over the management of NIMASA and
all government property in his possession to the most senior officer in the
agency who will remain in charge until a new Director-General is
appointed,” according to the statement.
Appointed on December 28, 2010, for an initial four-year tenure
by then President Goodluck Jonathan, that same administration had
confirmed Akpobolokemi for another four-year tenure last year, even
before the expiration of the first tenure.

Until his appointment then as NIMASA Director-General
and Chief Executive Officer, Akpobolokemi was a lecturer at the Niger
Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State, South-South
Nigeria.
Acting on the President’s directives, and going by the NIMASA organogram, Akpobolokemi is
expected to handover to the Executive
Director, Finance and Administration, Mr Baba Haruna Jauro, who
is the ranking personnel after the Director-General.

In a related development, the President has approved the
dissolution of the Governing Boards of Federal parastatals, agencies and
institutions.
He directed that all matters requiring the attention of the
boards in the affected institutions should be referred to him through the
Permanent Secretaries pending the reconstitution of the Boards.
“Until the boards are reconstituted, Chief Executive
Officers of the affected parastatals, agencies and institutions are to
refer all matters requiring the attention of their boards to the President,
through the Permanent Secretaries of their supervising ministries.

“While the dissolution does not affect Federal Executive
Bodies listed in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, it
covers administrative or technical committees and other similar organs
established by the now dissolved boards,” a statement by Adesina read.
