President of WISTA
Nigeria, Mrs Mary Madu Hamman, made known the plans to support the Aguleri
women fishing group on Thursday while giving her welcome address at the 2018
WISTA Business Luncheon and Annual Magazine at the Oriental Hotel, Lagos.

The event was themed:
“Sustainable Opportunities for Seafarers in Nigeria.”

The WISTA Nigeria
President said “WISTA intends to raise funds for the women’s fishing group in
Aguleri, to support them to purchase fishing boats, fishing nets and even boat
engines, besides our support for cadets in their studies, among other projects.”

Hamman told the
gathering that supporting the women’s fishing group would grow the women’s
enterprise.

On the choice of Ms
Hadiza Bala Usman as WISTA Personality of the Year, she said “the MD NPA has made
waves in the industry and she fits the category of the WISTA International 2018
theme: Women That Move The World.”

She also disclosed
that on July 5, 2018 WISTA International got an approval for consultative
status from the International Maritime Organisation(IMO), a status that would
guarantee that their voice would be heard, recognized and acted on.

She said: “The
consultative status gives WISTA the opportunity to promote diversity, inclusion
and women’s empowerment, which are WISTA’s main aims.

“WISTA Nigeria has
been following the trend of Blue Economy, which NIMASA and other maritime
agencies are making sure that our ocean is clean by tacking marine liters, getting
rid of pollution and plastic waste from the waters and therefore creating
opportunity for maritime training.”

Chairman
of the occasion, Captain Emmanuel Iheanacho, Chairman Integrated Oil and Gas
Limited, said sustainable opportunities for seafarers would mean ensuring that
Nigerians participated more in the country’s international trade in the area of
shipping.

“…we export oil as
a natural resource that God has given to us. But we should be able to add value
to that trade by being able to provide shipping services to that area in use.

“Unfortunately,
that is not the case in Nigeria because we dealing with a trade that is
dominated by non-Nigerian owners and the people who work on those ships are not
Nigerians.”

In a goodwill
message, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration
and Safety Agency (NIMASA) appreciated WISTA Nigeria for its efforts at
consistently encouraging women in the course of their careers in the maritime
industry.

Represented by
Hajia Lami Tumaka, Director Special Duties at NIMASA, Peterside said that NIMASA
would continue to support the Nigerian seafarers with the required training to
enable them access job opportunities both locally and internationally.

A high point of the
event was the unveiling and launch of the WISTA Nigeria annual magazine.
