The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, has pledged continued partnership with shipowners to reposition Nigeria’s maritime industry for global competitiveness, as it throws its full weight behind the revival of the Nigeria Maritime Exhibition and Conference (NIMAREX).
Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, gave the assurance when he received members of the NIMAREX 2025 Planning Committee, led by Mr. Sola Adewunmi, President of the Nigerian Shipowners Association (NISA), in his Abuja office on Tuesday.
According to the Minister, the Tinubu administration is committed to creating a conducive business environment, addressing longstanding industry bottlenecks, and developing policies that enhance indigenous ownership and participation in shipping.
“Our commitment to indigenous shipping is total and irreversible. The Federal Government is working round the clock to implement policies, funding mechanisms, and infrastructure that will enable Nigerian shipowners to compete favourably both locally and internationally,” Oyetola said.
“We are determined to see Nigerian-owned vessels flying our national flag and operating sustainably within our coastal waters and beyond. This will create jobs, retain value within our economy, and strengthen our maritime sovereignty,” he added.
The Minister commended the NIMAREX committee for reviving the once-dormant platform, describing it as a strategic avenue for collaboration, investment promotion, and knowledge exchange.
He assured that the Ministry will work closely with stakeholders to ensure the success of the 2025 edition, scheduled for November 17–19, 2025, in Lagos.
Earlier, Mr. Sola Adewunmi explained that the return of NIMAREX after years of inactivity aligns with the government’s renewed focus on the Blue Economy and efforts to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) into the maritime sector.
“NIMAREX is back, and this time it is bigger, broader, and better aligned with national objectives. We have the backing of key associations, including NISA, SOAN, and the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping. Our collective goal is to position Nigeria as a leading maritime hub in Africa.”
He lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for establishing the Marine and Blue Economy Ministry and praised Oyetola for his inclusive and visionary leadership, which, he said, has renewed confidence among shipowners and investors in the sector.
