NPA confident of Eastern Port relevance to Nigeria’s maritime development

Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero, the Managing
Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) on Monday expressed confidence of
the relevance of the Eastern Port to the development of the nation’s maritime
sector.

This is contained in a statement by the
General Manager, Public Affairs of the NPA, Capt. Iheanacho Ebubeogu, which was
made available to newsmen in Lagos.

The NPA Managing Director was speaking at a
meeting with major maritime stakeholders during his maiden working visit to the
Onne Port, in Port Harcourt over the weekend, the statement read.
It said that Ado Bayero implored stakeholders
in the Eastern Ports to realise the vital role they play in the nation’s
economy and their contributions to development of the industry.
It added that the NPA boss charged the
stakeholders to live up to the terms and conditions of their lease agreements in
their service delivery as expectations from port users, consumers and the
nation were high.
The Managing Director reassured that the NPA
will on its part collaborate with the stakeholders to ensure efficient perform
for the overall benefits of the nation’s economy, according to the statement.
“As stakeholders, you remain relevant in the
focal point of the nation’s maritime development. You must realise your vital
roles and contributions to the economy.
“We shall collaborate with you to ensure that
you perform effectively and efficiently for the benefit of the nation”, the
statement quoted the Managing Director.
It said while speaking, the Executive Director,
Marine and Operation, NPA Engr. David Omonibeke, said that the NPA Management
was aware of the challenges hindering the smooth operations at the Ports in the
Eastern axis.
 It said
Omonibeke gave assurance that the Management had started addressing the
challenges and with a resolve to attend to the challenges promptly in the
future.
The statement said Omonibeke was confident
that the collaborative efforts of stakeholders would enable the NPA Management surmount
the challenges of bad port access roads and challenge of evacuating cargo from
the port.
It said the General Manager, Eastern Ports
(NPA) Mr Obumneme Onuenyenwa commended the efforts of the Managing Director and
his team for ensuring the road expansion at the Western
Ports and the Eastern Ports.
The statement also said that the General
Manager, Intels Nigeria Ltd., Mr Sascha Kuchi, urged the Federal Government to
supply stakeholders with regular power in order to reduce the cost of doing
business at the Onne Port.
