It was gathered that the Management of Lagos Ports
Complex acted on the directive of the Managing Director- Nigerian Ports
Authority, Ms Hadiza Bala Usman, to engage in the clean-up exercise as a CSR
initiative for the Apapa Community.

It was also gathered that in an effort to ensure that
the side access road to the port is always free, the Port Management had
inspected the area and engaged commercial motor cyclists who pointed out the
menace caused by abandoned heaps of refuse littered along the road.

Efforts by the Estate Department of the Port to engage
Apapa Local Government Council for the clean-up had also met brick walls.

It was alleged that Apapa Local Government whose duty it
is to clean up streets and roads within its vicinity had in recent times turned
a blind eye to all roads leading to the port, also its surroundings, a
situation which sources say has heightened tension between both organisations.

Some business owners around the vicinity applauded the NPA’s
initiative and prayed that the Local Government would subsequently live up to
its duty to avoid sights of embarrassing refuse dumps which residents fear
could trigger an epidemic.
