The Nigerian Navy has commissioned a series of housing and infrastructure projects as part of efforts to improve the welfare of its personnel and strengthen operational effectiveness across the service.

The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, said the projects reflect the Navy’s commitment to addressing accommodation challenges, enhancing healthcare delivery and improving the overall wellbeing of officers, ratings and their families.

Speaking during the commissioning of the projects as part of activities marking the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy, Abbas described personnel welfare as a critical pillar in achieving operational efficiency and maintaining a motivated workforce.

Among the projects unveiled are multiple residential accommodation blocks, upgraded infrastructure and support facilities designed to provide a better living environment for naval personnel.
The Naval Chief noted that the projects form part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening institutional capacity while ensuring that officers and ratings enjoy improved working and living conditions.
According to him, the Navy has continued to invest in infrastructure development despite economic challenges, stressing that personnel welfare remains a top priority of his administration.
He explained that adequate accommodation and quality healthcare are essential to maintaining high morale and boosting the effectiveness of military personnel in carrying out their duties.
Abbas also highlighted ongoing efforts to complete inherited and abandoned projects across various naval formations, saying the service is determined to ensure that public resources are not wasted.
He disclosed that several previously stalled projects have been revived and completed under the current leadership, while more are expected to be delivered in the coming months.
The welfare initiatives include improvements in electricity supply, water reticulation systems, road networks and other supporting infrastructure within naval residential areas.
The Naval Chief emphasized that the projects are intended to directly benefit personnel and their families while creating a more conducive environment for service delivery.
He urged beneficiaries to take ownership of the facilities and cultivate a strong maintenance culture to preserve the investments for future generations.
“The true value of any facility lies in its proper utilization and maintenance,” he said, while calling on personnel to use electricity and other resources responsibly.
Abbas further expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for its continued support of the Nigerian Navy, noting that such backing has contributed significantly to the execution of critical welfare and infrastructure projects.
He also commended contractors, engineers and project teams involved in the projects for their professionalism and dedication.
The commissioning of the housing projects comes amid renewed efforts by the Nigerian Navy to modernize its infrastructure, improve personnel welfare and enhance operational readiness as it celebrates seven decades of service to the nation.
The Nigerian Navy, established in 1956, remains a key component of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with responsibilities that include maritime security, protection of national assets and safeguarding the country’s territorial waters.
