The immediate past President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Prince Adewale Adeyanju, has congratulated the newly elected branch president of the Dockworkers branch, Comrade Bolaji Agboola, and his executives.
A statement by the MWUN’s spokesman, John Kennedy Ikemefuna, said Prince Adeyanju urged the newly elected president of the dockworkers to embrace his executives with a touch of olive branch, recalling the false turmoil that preceded the peaceful election, which took place in Warri, Delta state.
According to the statement, Adeyanju praised the outgone president, Comrade Tajudeen Ibrahim Ohize, for his commitment to the branch during his tenure, as he admonished the new leadership to do better, hence, they were voted to surpass all their predecessors.
Prince Adeyanju, who is currently the Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Chairman Global, International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) also commended the President-General of the Union, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, for his cautiousness in handling the pre-election period until the election-day.
“In fact, I give it all to the Delta State- born labour leader, maritime expert and seasoned sailor, for a job well done. He has indeed made me proud, and by extension, the entire Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, in carrying out this onerous assignment of the Union’s elections so far,” he said
In same vein, Adeyanju also celebrated Comrade Sunday Avose, President of the Seafarers Branch of the Union, on this day of Seafarers, being marked in Port Harcourt.
He sends his warm greetings to all the stakeholders in the maritime sector and friends of the Union, government agencies, top government functionaries, dignitaries from all walks of life across the country and beyond, for gracing the 2025 Seafarers’ Day and identifying with the Nigerian Seafarers.
Prince Adeyanju used the occasion to advise the Nigerian Maritime and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to look into the challenges of the Nigerian seafarers and their training institutions, where the greater number of the cadets are trained with no vessels to engage them year round.
He urged NIMASA to ensure the availability of documents that would put the Nigerian seafarer at par with their counterparts globally.
