Women Doing Business The Social Way: How Women Entrepreneurs Can Use Social Media To Build A Business
          Share this
          Business and Entrepreneurship, Thursday  Feb. 20, 2014, 1.30pm- 2.30pm

Hosted by: Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre – W.TEC
          ABOUT THE EVENT:
The Women’sWomen Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC) is organising a panel discussion, which brings together a group of successful women entrepreneurs who are using social media in innovative and interesting ways to grow and promote
          their enterprises.
They will share key experiences of using social media tools and, through a facilitated discussion, will explore the benefits and challenges they encountered.
Social media (and more generally, information technology) holds a lot of potential for showcasing a brand, identifying prospects and converting them to customers, growing a loyal community of customers and supporters, increase digital exposure, enhancing company trustworthiness, cut marketing costs and increasing sales.
However, social media needs to be applied within a strategically thought-out plan, with an understanding of how it fits in within each company’s unique circumstances.
The knowledge that participants will get from our panel will empower them to go forth and use social media appropriately.
Social media has rapidly become a vital part of many Nigerian businesses’ marketing and branding toolkit.
This is not surprising when one considers that the number of online Nigerians is estimated to be 48 million (about 28% of the entire population), which represents significant business opportunities.
As SMW 2014’s theme states: a connected Africa is the future. This is true for both individuals and organisations, who can explore, identify and benefit from the networks and platforms that social media enables.
          OUTLINE:
The panel will comprise of the following segments:
          • Speakers share their experiences using technology
            (particularly social media) for entrepreneurship
          • Question and answer session
          • What next? How can participants translate ideas to
            action?
          • Wrap-up & Giveaways!!
          TARGET AUDIENCE:
Participants will ideally be founders or managers of organisations, or planning to set one up soon. They will be thinking of the possibilities that technology and especially social media holds for their businesses. Our speakers will share their high and low
points of using information technology and social media to build, promote and implement their businesses.
Participants will learn to identify possible challenges and receive valuable advice on creating a strategic plan to integrate
          social media to their businesses.

We want to inspire our participants to look beyond the hype that is typically associated with social media and start to ask critical questions, spurred on after hearing our panelists’ experiences, so that they can think about social media for enterprise in a more informed manner.
Participants will leave our event inspired by the experiences shared by the speakers and especially motivated to start developing their own road maps for deploying social media in their organizations.
          THE SPEAKERS:
The event will be moderated by Oreoluwa Somolu, the founder and Executive Director of the Women’s Technology
          Empowerment Centre (W.TEC).
W.TEC builds the capacities of Nigerian girls and women, to increase their economic power and ability to speak about issues affecting their lives, through information technology training, technology-based projects, mentoring and research. W.TEC works in partnership with local and international NGOs, educational and research organizations.
Our vision is a society where Nigerian women and girls are able to create and use information and communication technology for learning, activism, entrepreneurship, and professional activities effectively.

To this end, W.TEC has successfully organized many technology camps for teenage girls, as well as training for women entrepreneurs and members of the civil society.
The panelists will be women (business and social) entrepreneurs at varying stages of the enterpriselifecycle (i.e. start-up through to experienced entrepreneur). We will also have women who consult for organisations, providing them with support in
          deploying technology solutions.
          Our panelists will:
          • Share their experiences using technology and especially
social media in implementing and promoting their enterprises
          • Discuss specific considerations in using social media,
            including:

            • Is social media right for me?
            • How can I build a mega-following using social media?
            • How can I grow my influence using social media?
            • How can I use social media to tell my story and how
does this help grow my business?
            • How can social media drive more traffic to my products
              and services?
            • What are the unique challenges of being a woman in
business that social media can help alleviate?
