Inland Container operations to hit 15,000 TEUs to Kaduna, Kano in 2015, says Operator

The Inland Container Nigeria Limited on Wednesday said
that at least 15,000 TEUs containers would
be moved from the Lagos  seaports
to its container terminals in Kaduna and Kano for 2015.

The Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr Yusuf
Ismail, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in an interview in
Lagos.

He said that the Nigeria Railway Corporation had
promised to provide more wagons and locomotives to boost the operation of its
container movement to the hinterlands.
“Our target for inland container for 2015 is 15,000
TEUs, that is, Twenty Equivalent Units of cargo and which
we have already worked on and we have also discussed with the MD of Railway;
that was in December or early November.

“There is arrangement in place by the Federal Government,
which he told us
 by the end of this
first quarter we will see it working.

“That they are going to provide more locomotives and they
are going to provide more wagons to enable us move more containers to our
customers in the North.

“Our projection is 15,000 TEU. So, If they have enough
wagons and locomotives that will move the 15,000, I am happy. I’m going to be
the happiest person because it will reduce my burdens of road problem.

“The roads are bad. So, and look at the distance we
are covering. From Lagos to Kano is more than 1200 kilometres. From Lagos to
Kaduna, is about 970 kilometres, so, it is a long distance.”
He said only about 10 per cent of their monthly output
was being moved instead of 100 per cent, compared with advanced countries where
they have dry ports, ICDs, terminals operating in the hinterland.
Ismail noted that movement of cargo by rail would boost
cargo delivery, and develop a vital aspect of trade.
It would be recalled that the Nigerian Ports Authority had
earlier called for the provision of more wagons and locomotives to boost
container movement from the ports to the hinterland.
