Hundreds of demonstrators led by Atiku Abubakar, Senator David Mark, Peter Obi, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, Aminu Tambuwal and activist Aisha Yesufu did not mind the early morning rain in Abuja, as they marched to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters today, demanding that the commission immediately recognise the David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Security had been significantly beefed up at INEC’s Zambezi Crescent premises ahead of the protest, with the Nigeria Police, Army, NSCDC and State Security Service forming a cordon to control the crowd and prevent clashes.
Protesters, many holding placards and banners, chanted slogans insisting that INEC reverse its recent derecognition of the Mark-Aregbesola leadership.
The protest comes after INEC last week removed Senator Mark and other officials from its official list of ADC executives following a Court of Appeal decision.
The ADC leadership insists the move is politically motivated and violates a previously filed INEC affidavit confirming their recognition.
Leading voices in the protest accused INEC of undermining opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
Aisha Yesufu alleged corruption within the commission, claiming that some officials had been influenced to remove the legitimate ADC leadership, a claim INEC has not addressed publicly.
Supporters of the protest include members of the Obidient Movement and youth coalitions, who have called for transparency and accountability in the management of party affairs.
Observers note that despite the rainfall, the large turnout reflects growing frustration over political marginalisation and internal disputes within the ADC.
At the time of reporting, demonstrators remained at the INEC gates, with speeches from leading figures continuing alongside chants demanding recognition of their leadership.
Political analysts warn the situation is fluid, with potential implications for Nigeria’s upcoming general elections.
