The Chairman of the Tincan Island Port chapter of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Prince Olawale Cole, has led other elected executive members on an official visit to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Commander of the Tincan Island Port Strategic Command, Ofoyeju Mitchell. The working visit sought to establish a collaborative framework between the ANLCA and the NDLEA in tackling the growing menace of narcotics at the seaport.
During the visit, Prince Cole emphasised the association’s commitment to supporting NDLEA’s efforts in eradicating drug trafficking, noting that the challenges posed by narcotics are detrimental to both national security and the ease of doing business at the port. “It is crucial for us to work hand in hand with the NDLEA to implement effective measures that will enhance our operations while keeping drug trafficking at bay,” he stated.
Ofoyeju Mitchell, the NDLEA Commander, welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that the partnership between his agency and the ANLCA would lead to more effective narcotic control. “I am pleased to see the leadership of ANLCA take this important step towards collaboration. Together, we can create a safer environment for legitimate trade and ensure that Tin Can Island Port remains a drug-free territory. This is a proactive approach aimed at enhancing regulatory compliance and combating drug trafficking along Nigeria’s crucial trade corridors.” Mitchell stated.
Commander Mitchell urged members of ANLCA to be circumspect and professional in adopting the Know Your Customer (KYC) principle so as to avoid being used by members of drug trafficking cartels. In his words, “You have a noble profession, but you must be wary of the occupational hazards. Knowing your customers will help you from falling into the traps of drug barons.”
Prince Cole was presented a copy of the NDLEA Tincan News Bulletin and decorated as a War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) Partner by Commander Mitchell. Both leaders discussed various strategies and initiatives that could be adopted to improve surveillance and enforcement measures at the port, as well as the importance of raising awareness among customs agents regarding the signs of drug trafficking and professionalism in their line of duty. They agreed to establish regular communications and joint operations to ensure that their interests are aligned in the fight against narcotics.
The visit marks a significant step towards fostering a robust relationship between customs agents and the NDLEA, a collaboration that both parties believe will ultimately enhance operational efficiency and safeguard the seaports from the impacts of illegal drug trade.
As the new executive team of the ANLCA embarks on their tenure, the NDLEA Commander urged them to prioritise national security while supporting law enforcement agencies in their respective missions. Prince Cole concluded the meeting by reaffirming the association’s readiness to mobilise resources and engage its membership in supporting anti-narcotic initiatives.
