Transporting container cargoes from the Ports to locations across Lagos and other parts of the country will now enjoy 30 per cent reduction in cost, the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC)has disclosed.
In a statement on Thursday, the NSC said the agreement for cutting 30 per cent off costs of transporting goods from the ports was reached in a meeting held with haulage associations and unions on April 21.
“The aim of the meeting was to work out a modus operandi for cargo evacuation from the seaports that complies with COVID-19 guidelines as well as support port operations and the economy, ” the NSC said.
According to the NSC, “the meeting recognised the important role of the haulage sector in the logistics value chain and the compelling need for haulers to come up with a unified action to support the economy in the current effort for the containment and control of the spread of COVID-19.”
A key discussion at the meeting was the recognition of the challenges haulers face relating to the non-issuance of Terminal Delivery Order (TDO) by so.

They also discussed matters concerning extortionist that haulers face along the port access roads and ban on inter-state movement as well as the very limited operations by Banks, an issue already being addressed by the NSC.
Regarding the issue on reducing haulage cost, the NSC said “The Associations and Unions agreed to reduce haulage cost by 30% across board, to serve as benchmark freight rates for the evacuation of cargoes from the seaports during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The groups agreed on constituting a monitoring a d compliance team to ensure the benchmark rates are complied with, while the NSC appealed to users of the service to take advantage of the reduction in cost for now.
The associations present at the meeting were the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), the Association of Maritime Transport Owners (AMATO), The Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Corporate Fleet Penetration Association, Container Truck Owners Association, Council of Maritime Transport Union and Association(COMTUA) ,and the Amalgamation of Container Truck Owners.
For the records, cost of moving cargoes from Lagos ports to locations outside the state will now enjoy a 30% rebate as has been agreed.
With the 30 per cent reduction in transportation costs, moving cargoes from Lagos ports to
Ikeja/Agege and environs will now be N280,000/350,000 for 20ft and 40ft containers respectively. To Amuwo/Okota/Satellite Town, owners of containers will pay N245, 000/280,000 for 20ft/ 40ft respectively.

Moving 20ft/40ft containers from the ports to Surulere/Ijesha/Mushin is now N210, 000/N266,000 respectively. From the ports to Lagos Island, costs of container movement now N245, 000/ N280, 000 respectively for 20ft/ 40ft.
Destinations including Badagry/Agnara/Mowe/Shagamu/Lekki Free Zone/ Ikorodu(West) from the Lagos Ports will cost N315,000/N385,000 for 20ft/40ft containers respectively.
