The Northern Youth Association of Nigeria, led by the National Vice President, Mallam Danladi Iliya, has thrown its weight behind the drug control efforts of the Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
This was made known when a delegation of the association visited the State Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, at the State Command Headquarters in Benin City.
Danladi noted that the Edo State Command of the Agency has contributed immensely to the war against illicit drugs in the country.
His words, “The Northern Youth Association has monitored the outstanding contributions of Edo State command and Commander Mitchell; hence the decision to present the Ahmadu Bello Platinum Leadership Award. Jakadan Matasan Arewa Icon of Nation Building is in recognition of your tireless efforts in youth empowerment, philanthropy, educational development, and the effective management of resources.”
The group expressed profound appreciation for Commander Mitchell’s unyielding commitment to transforming the lives of Nigerian youth by tackling pressing social issues like drug abuse. Danladi described the award as part of the association’s broader initiative, which celebrates individuals who demonstrate exceptional dedication to national development.
In his response, Commander Mitchell graciously acknowledged the honour and award to the Edo State Command. He highlighted the crucial role of the NDLEA in combating drug-related challenges in society.
“Our functions include coordination of drug laws, undertaking investigations, and prosecuting those involved in the production, trafficking, and sale of narcotics and psychotropic substances. We are also dedicated to providing anti-drug abuse counselling and rehabilitating individuals with substance use disorders,” he elaborated.
While emphasising his commitment to building a drug-free society, Commander Mitchell stated, “I do not expect rewards for performing my responsibilities. Our work is driven by a deep-seated desire to foster a healthier community.”
In a gesture of solidarity, the commander decorated Mallam Danladi Iliya, as a War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) Partner, encouraging collaborative efforts in promoting drug control initiatives.
Ofoyeju presented a copy of the NDLEA Today magazine to the delegation, urging them to continuously recognise deserving individuals playing pivotal roles in Nigeria’s growth and development. His appeal underscored a collective responsibility to appreciate and support those contributing positively to societal growth.
The recognition not only celebrated the achievements of individuals like Commander Mitchell and the Edo State Command but also served as a clarion call for continued efforts in drug abuse prevention and youth empowerment across the nation.
The Northern Youth Association affirmed their resolve to work hand in hand with the NDLEA in addressing the profound issues related to drug abuse, thereby fostering an environment conducive to positive change and community resilience.
