The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Edo State is adopting a holistic approach in tackling the drug problem in the State.
This was revealed by the Edo State NDLEA Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, during a courtesy visit to the State’s Police Commissioner, CP Monday Ogbonika, in Benin City.
The meeting, which was aimed at fostering collaboration between the NDLEA, the Nigeria Police Force and other stakeholders dedicated to a crime-free society, will help to address the illicit drug problem in the State.
The meeting took place at the Edo State Police Command headquarters with notable participants. They include Honourable Ogheneovo Andrew, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Drug Policy, and Reverend Father Dr Fidelis Arhedo, the Executive Director of the Uromi Justice Department.
Oghenevo expressed the state government’s unwavering commitment to confronting drug trafficking cartels. In his words, “Governor Monday Okpebholo is committed to eradicating illicit drugs from Edo State. I am glad that we are here to find a lasting solution to making our communities safe and secure.”
Commander Ofoyeju emphasised the critical need for unity among law enforcement agencies and civil society organisations in combating the drug menace.
“The fight against drug trafficking requires a concerted effort. We must leverage our resources, intelligence sharing and other strategies to dismantle drug trafficking cartels. The collaboration with the police in intelligence sharing and joint operations will no doubt enhance our operational capabilities. Our goal is not just to intercept drugs but to dismantle the networks that facilitate trafficking as well as promote public enlightenment through the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative of the General Buba Marwa-led administration,” he stated.
During the meeting, CP Ogbonika underscored the importance of a coordinated approach to law enforcement efforts. He said that the police force is committed to supporting the NDLEA’s initiatives and will intensify efforts towards community involvement in crime control in the state. Let us establish a formidable stakeholder forum charged with the responsibility of devising practical ways of fighting drugs and other forms of criminality in the State,” Ogbonika stated.
Honourable Andrew reiterated the state government’s readiness to back strategic initiatives aimed at reducing drug abuse and trafficking. “We are in this fight together, and the governor is determined to provide the necessary support to ensure that our youth are protected from the dangers of drugs,” he affirmed.
Rev. Father Dr Arhedo, an advocate for community involvement, added that community mobilisation is crucial to winning the war against drugs. He highlighted the importance of creating awareness campaigns that will involve schools, churches, and local organisations to connect with the most vulnerable to drug addiction in our communities.
The highlight of the meeting was the decoration of CP Ogbonika and Honourable Ogheneovo by Commander Mitchell as WADA Partners as well as the presentation of copies of NDLEA Today magazines. This crucial meeting is considered a bold step towards a comprehensive and effective response to the drug problem and other crimes in the state.
