NNS Beecroft intercepts bags of narcotics weighing over 2500kg

The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft has intercepted substances suspected to be Cannabis Sativa at Ibeju Lekki and Alaba Rago in Lagos state.

This is contained in a statement by the NNS Beecroft Base Information Officer, Happiness Collins.

Attributing the success of the operation to a routine intelligence-led patrol, the navy said that the large wooden boat which was intercepted at Ibeju Lekki was laden with 64 bags of Cannabis Sativa, weighing over 2,500kg.

It further disclosed that: “Subsequently, a targeted raid based on credible intelligence around Alaba Rago led to the interception of another sack containing over 23 wraps of substances suspected to be derivatives of Cannabis Sativa known as SK, in the early hours of January 14, 2024.”

According to the navy, the effort in curbing the influx of narcotics into the country through Lagos waterways is worthwhile, considering the connection between drugs, violence and crime.

The navy also highlighted the fact that besides financing criminalities with ill-gotten wealth, the abuse also poses grave risk to the well-being of users, resulting to unpredictable behaviors with attendant consequences on national security.

The intercepted narcotics have been handed over to officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for necessary action, the navy disclosed.

The navy reiterated its commitment to maintaining a secure and drug-free nation, working strategically in line with the values of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.
