MWUN congratulates Nigerians on Democracy Day

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has congratulated Nigerians on the celebration of Democracy Day.

President-General of the Union, Comrade, Adewale Adeyanju, alongside the Union, also felicitated with the Federal Government  under the presidency of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, Commander – In – Chief of Nigerian Armed Forces on the occasion.

It would be recalled that Democracy Day in Nigeria was informed by the annulment of June 12, 1993 election where Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola ((MKO ) won the election of that year under the Military regime.

The then Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB), annuled what was adjudged the fairest,  freest and widely -acclaimed best election in Nigeria and the entire global community amidst the international observers, who came to witness the election.

The statement read in part that: “Today, Abiola has been so honored and had become a matyr and a symbol of democracy in the country, given to the understanding of the immediate past administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, who made June 12th a nation wide holiday.

“However, Kudos must be given to Buhari for recognizing what Chief Abiola represents as far as democracy is concerned, especially to Nigeria and Nigerians.

“In this regard, on behalf of my entire executives in the Maritime Workers Union, we celebrate with Nigeria and her teeming resilient citizens who have have come this far in upholding what’s today known as democracy day, which has become a reality in celebrating an uninterrupted democracy since 1999.

“On this note, once again the Union wish the nation, Nigeria, a happy Democracy Day.”

Meanwhile, the Lagos Industrial District under the Seamen, NIWA & Water Transport Branch of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria over the weekend inaugurated a new Unit, Ibasa Ijegun Unit at Satellite Town, Lagos.

During the inauguration of the newly formed Unit, the following Comrades emerged, who will run the affairs for a tenure of four years are as follows: Shittu A. Ahmed – Chairman; Idowu Hassan – Vice Chairman; Wale Rabiu – Secretary; Raheem Adagun – Asst Secretary; Afolabi Lekan – Treasurer; Sulaimon Omojoyibo – Organising Secretary. Others are David Uwaifo – Asst. Organising Secretary; Muis Akindele, Bolarinwa Nurudeen; Ogungbemi Oyeyemi; Lateef Jamiu; Rasheed Igboro; Joy Iyamu all members of the unit executives.

The Chairman of the Lagos Industrial District, Comrade Bashir Saidu was elated after the unit election and inauguration which he said was a huge success to his administration since he assumed the position of the District Chairman.

He was grateful to God for the success and showered encomium on the President -General of the Maritime Workers Union (MWUN) Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, who doubles as the Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for giving him the opportunity to emerge as the District Chairman during his election.

He said he (Bashir) would not let the Union down on all fronts, saying that the units under him have become seven from six he met on ground; and he would work towards making sure that the units are up to date in the payment of their Union dues monthly, which is the bedrock of the Union’s membership as stipulated by the Constitution of the Union.

The Industrial District Chairman also reiterated his commitment towards the payment of his district dues as at when due, which is the set target for all the arms of the union.
