Nigeria is a very important member of the IMO – Arsenio Valasco
The new Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez Velasco, met with Nigeria’s Alternate Permanent Representative at the IMO, Prince Abdul Dirisu and his team, to discuss issues related to maritime safety and security with particular attention given to the current situation in the Red Sea.
Velasco noted the leadership Nigeria is providing in terms of security in the Gulf of Guinea, with commendations for the Deep Blue Project.
He urged Nigeria to share knowledge to assist in curbing the disturbing insecurity trend in the Red Sea. The IMO Secretary General acknowledged that Nigeria is a very important member of the IMO, hence his request for the meeting barely one month in office.
On his part, Nigeria’s Alternative Permanent Representative at the IMO, Prince Abdul Dirisu, assured the Secretary General of Nigeria’s commitment to safe and secure maritime domain, enhancing maritime trade in an environmentally friendly manner.
He noted the need for security in the Gulf of Guinea to remain in focus, while the challenges in the Red Sea are being addressed.
