Engineering crucial to actualizing sustainable Blue Economy – NIMASA DG
…AS Nigeria marks World Engineering Day
The Director General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Bashir Jamoh, OFR, has described the Engineering profession as crucial to the actualization of the Blue Economy ideals.
Dr. Jamoh stated this on Monday during the commemoration of the World Engineering Day.
Speaking on the role of engineering in the maritime sector, the NIMASA DG disclosed that being in a digital age, nothing is being done manually; hence, everything about the maritime sector evolves around technology, which points to the important role of the Engineering profession.
“Today, we are in the digital age and things are no longer done manually. The maritime industry’s evolution towards sustainability is dependent largely on the engineering profession and same can be said of the Blue Economy. Smart Ports, green energy and harnessing Ocean resources are all dependent of the engineering profession.
“It is worthy of note that the youths constitute over 65% of our population and they are much more tech savvy. This is simply a pointer to the fact that technology will play a major role in the future of Nigeria and any sector that does not embrace engineering and technology risk being obsolete in Nigeria. Therefore, engineering and ecological advancements are key to enhancing Nigerian maritime capabilities, facilitating smoother trade, and positioning the blue economy, contributing to economic growth,” he said.”
