Rear Admiral Wambai visits Tongeji Island…reiterates commitment to citizens’ security
The Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Yakubu Wambai, has on behalf of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, reiterated the commitment of the Nigerian Navy to securing the territorial integrity of Nigeria while ensuring the safety and security of law- abiding citizens in Tongeji Island and its environs.
Command Information Officer, Edward Yeibo, made this known in a statement to newsmen on Monday in Lagos.
According to the statement, Wambai made the commitment when he paid a courtesy call on the Akoko of Tongeji, Oba Biolorunkosi Okiki Sule 1, during his familiarisation tour of Western Naval Command.
He asserted that the Nigerian Navy has over the years, maintained presence on the Island and supported the community through provision of portable water, medical outreach, amongst others in line with the Nigerian Navy’s Civil Military Cooperation Line of Operations.
Rear Admiral Wambai thanked the Akoko of Tongeji for donating a parcel of land to the Nigerian Navy for the establishment of a Naval Outpost to further strengthen the naval deployment on the Island.
The Kabiyesi commended the Nigerian Navy for maintaining presence on the Island and asserted that the deployment of the Nigerian Navy has helped to ensure security on the Island and adjoining areas which has led to peaceful coexistence.
He added that Tongeji Island is an agrarian community that has a land mass of about 200 hectares and a population of over 1000.
The Island is located in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State and shares border with Benin Republic.
