Over 5000 abandoned containers at ports responsible for congestion, says NPA
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) on Tuesday blamed the abandonment of over 5000 containers at the ports for the congestion being experienced.
Ag. Managing Director of the NPA, Mr. Bello Koko, made the disclosure in Abuja, during an interactive session with the House of Representatives Committee on Customs.
Bello told the Committee that extortion at illegal checkpoints mounted by security operatives was disrupting the free-flow of vehicles in and out of the port areas.
He further explained that at the over 20 checkpoints mounted by the police, there were area boys who collected monies on the behalf of the police officers.
Koko was responding to a question from Chairman of the Committee, Leke Abejide, speaking on reasons why the electronic call-up system had not been working.
