The Nigerian
Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has introduced a new
seafarer’s medical certification.
This is contained in a statement

The statement said that the new
certification was in compliance with extant requirements of the Maritime Labour
Convention (MLC) 2006 and Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping
(STCW) 1998 as amended.

It said the Acting Director
General of NIMASA, Mr Haruna Baba Jauro, described the effort as part of
NIMASA’s role of domesticating International Maritime Laws and Convention to
ensure marine environment safety.

According to the statement, the
director general said the new certificate was more secure as it was printed
with better security features.

It added that the director general
assured stakeholders of the agency’s commitment to better safety standards in
all areas of maritime operations.

It said NIMASA had also procured
patrol boats, ambulances and priority operational vehicles in compliance with
other international maritime laws to which Nigeria is a party.

Notable among the laws are the
Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS’74) and the Search and Rescue (SAR) 1978
Conventions among others.

to the statement, the agency had also been facilitating capacity building of
human resources towards the successful implementation of these conventions.
