Cadets from the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Akwa Ibom, will be participating in the cadetship scheme of the NLNG Shipping and Marine Services Limited (NSML) for overseas sea time training.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NSLML, Abdulkadir Ahmed, announced during the induction event in Lagos that 13 cadets from the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, in Oron, were selected for the sea time training, underscoring the academy’s pivotal role in producing Nigeria’s next generation of seafarers.
Ahmed emphasized that the programme is designed to equip cadets with world-class skills and exposure, preparing them to become leaders in the maritime sector. “By developing local talent and expertise, we contribute to the growth of the Nigerian maritime industry, creating opportunities for economic advancement and global competitiveness,” he said.
He described seafarers as the lifeblood of the shipping industry, noting that the demand for highly skilled professionals has never been greater in today’s era of rapid technological change and expanding international trade.
Speaking on the development, the Acting Rector of MAN Oron, Dr. Kevin Okonna, revealed that NSML conducted a detailed audit of the academy’s training facilities before finalizing the selection process. He described the development as a revival of the long-standing partnership between the Academy and NSML, dating back to the early 1990s when the Academy cadets completed their mandatory sea time through the company and later rose to senior officer positions on NLNG vessels.
Ahmed also highlighted NSML’s broader commitment to excellence, pointing to the company’s Maritime Centre of Excellence (MCOE) in Bonny Island, which has secured UK MCA accreditation for four advanced courses to teach and issue certificates in Human Element Leadership & Management (HELM-Management) HELM-Operational, Electronic Chart Display & Information System (ECDIS), and Basic Liquefied Gas Tanker Operations.
He urged the cadets to embrace diligence, focus, and excellence, saying: “Take advantage of the training, mentorship, and exposure this programme offers. Develop your skills, build your network, and strive to become the best version of yourself.”
While the Academy’s cadets formed the bulk of the selected group, eight cadets from the Nigerian Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko, Delta State, were also inducted.
The Vice Chancellor of NMU, Prof. Florence Oluwafemi, described the inclusion as a significant milestone for maritime education in Nigeria, stressing the importance of blending practical industry exposure with academic learning to drive innovation.
The cadets expressed gratitude for the opportunity, and pledged to uphold the values of excellence and professionalism throughout their training journey.
