The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), under the leadership of Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, on Friday, 13 August 2025, confirmed Comrade Oniha Erazua as the substantive Secretary-General of the Union, while two others were appointed General Secretaries.
A statement by the Union said that the three appointments were announced during a joint session of both the National Administrative Committee (NAC) and the Central Working Committee (CWC) of the Union.
According to the statement, the Union approved Erazua’s position officially after he served in acting capacity for six months.
He rose through the ranks as Assistant Secretary-General (ASG) before his promotion to Deputy Secretary-General (DSG), previously combined the portfolios of Training & Research, Education, and Media before assuming his current position following the retirement of his predecessor, Comrade Felix Akingboye.
The Edo State-born comrade of the Union holds a Master’s Degree from the University of Ibadan, and he previously worked as a tutor before joining the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria.
Others confirmed include Olangwe Fred Dagogo, formerly Organising Secretary, a position he held diligently for the maximum term before his promotion to General Secretary of the Seamen & Water Transport Branch of the Union. Comrade Dagogo is a graduate of Mechanical Engineering from the University of Port Harcourt.
Comrade Joseph Ekwere’s appointment was also confirmed as General Secretary of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) Branch of the Union.
He rose from the position of Computer Secretary, which he held diligently for the maximum term under the Seamen & Water Transport Branch before his current role. Ekwere holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Lagos. The three Scribes have since been congratulated by the Union.
