The Federal High Court sitting in Benin City has sentenced a 29 years old female drug trafficker, Owoeye Tobi, to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour.
This is in connection with multiple drug charges involving unlawful possession of illegal substances, including Cannabis Sativa, Heroin, Cocaine, Tramadol capsules, and Methamphetamine.
In his ruling, Hon. Justice B. O. Quadiri sentenced Owoeye Tobi to 10 years with hard labour or an option of a twenty-five million naira fine. According to Quadri, “After reviewing the facts of this case, you are hereby sentenced to two calendar years’ imprisonment with hard labour on each count or to pay an option of a fine of five million on each count.”
NDLEA Edo State commander Mitchell Ofoyeju, while reacting to the judgement, noted that such strict penalties are essential in deterring potential offenders and reinforcing the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking.
“I am pleased with the judgement. Drug trafficking is a criminal offence that has caused untold havoc to mankind, affecting individuals, families and society. Those who seek to inflict pain on society must not go unpunished. If drug traffickers know that penalty is not only certain but commensurate, they will be dissuaded. The ruling is a welcome development and also highly commendable. We will continue to work collaboratively with law enforcement, the judiciary, and community organisations to address the drug problem.”
The convict, who hails from Osun State, was charged in case number FHC/B/16c/2025, following her arrest in February 2025 by officers of the NDLEA Edo State command. She was found in unlawful possession of drugs weighing 168.1 grams. The breakdown includes 161 grams of Cannabis Sativa, 0.2 grams of Heroin, 0.7 grams of Cocaine, 2.4 grams of Tramadol capsules, and 3.8 grams of Methamphetamine.
Tobi faced five counts of drug possession, each leading to a sentence of two calendar years of imprisonment with hard labour. Alternatively, the court granted the option of a monetary fine of 5 million naira for each count. Should Tobi opt for the fines, she would be required to pay a total of 25 million naira, which equates to ten years of imprisonment should she fail to pay the fine.
The Edo State Command has reiterated its dedication to combating the illicit drug trade and urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious drug activities. The conviction of Tobi serves as a stark reminder of the legal repercussions awaiting drug dealers.
