The Nigerian Navy Secondary School(NNSS), Okura, Kogi state, emerged as winner of the STEM competition, while her Ojo counterpart won the quiz and debate categories in the just-concluded 2024 Chief of Naval Staff(CNS) Annual Inter-School Debate, Quiz, and STEM competition for the Nigerian Navy Military and Secondary Schools, which held on the 28 and 29 May, in NNSS Ojo, Lagos.
The Directorate of Naval Education in a statement on Wednesday, said that the competition themed: ‘Information and Communication Technology: A Panacea for Improved Educational Service and National Development’, was part of the Directorate’s contribution to commemorate the 2024 Nigerian Navy Week, marking the navy’s 68th anniversary.
It also noted that “the competition was designed to provide the students with the privilege of displaying their mastery the concept taught in the classroom as well as serve as a measure for peer review.”
The 36 participants who attended the two-day event were drawn from the Nigerian Navy Military and Welfare Secondary Schools.
Meanwhile, only two of the five invited external schools, the Command Day Secondary School, Ojo and the Naval Officers Wives Association Secondary School, joined in the programme.
“The Judges for the various categories of the competition were sourced from the Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), Directorate of Naval Education( DNED), Naval Air Base (NAB) Ojo, and staff from the invited schools.
“The Committee nominated external Judges for all categories of the competition. This is to ensure fairness and objectivity in the conduct of the ceremony,” the statement reads in part.
A breakdown of the winners in the various categories show that in STEM, NNSS Okura, Kogi state came first, NNSS Ogbomosho was second, NNSS Port Harcourt was third , while NNMS Ikot Ntuen, Akwa Ibom, was fourth.
For the Debate, NNSS Ojo was first, NNSS Calabar came second, NNMS Ikot Ntuen was third, and NNSS Okura was fourth position. In the Quiz competition, NNSS Ojo came tops, second position was by NNMS Ikot Ntuen, third position was NNSS Okura, and NNSS Port Harcourt was fourth.
The Special Guest of Honour, the Flag Officer Commanding West, was represented by the Commander NNS WEY, Cdre MM Braimah. The Award ceremony was done by the Managing Director of the Naval Engineering Services Ltd., Rear Admiral B. Iyalla.
