Tribute: Margaret Onyema-Orakwusi – a beacon of Nigerian Maritime Industry
Mrs. Margaret Nkemka Onyema-Orakwusi was a mentor in the true sense of the word; she cared and showed how much she did.
Specifically, she played a great role while we had the lunch of the book ‘Beacons of Nigerian Maritime Industry’ and of course, in several other areas where she offered support.
An excerpt from the book, in her honour.
Margaret Nkemka Onyema-Orakwusi
Former President, Nigerian Trawler Owners Association
Former Chairman, Planning Committee, Nigerian Maritime Expo (2013, 2014)
Introduction
Confident about running a business in maritime and creating job opportunities, Barrister Margaret Onyema-Orakwusi stood up for what she believed in, fishing. From one fishing vessel, she grew her fleet of 22 vessels by direct ownership and lease holding. And as President of the Nigerian Trawler Owners Association (NITOA), she waded through the headed challenge of standing up in defense of the quality of fish exports from Nigeria. From the EU to Boston, to Washington, she defended the truth, that fish from Nigeria would pass required world-standard in terms of quality safe for consumption. Of course, her drive came at a cost.
Fond Memories
Fond memories for Margaret are beautiful to behold. From her home at 3, Romxy Road, Ikoyi, to fun-filled weekends at the Tarkwa Bay, life was good, good running around the beach and playing with sand. She enjoyed the privilege of Sundays launch with her family at the Ikoyi Hotel.
