Akinsoji’s thoughts on NIMASA wreck-removal exercise
… Reference should be made to previous reports, develop national guidelines on wrecks

The take-off of the wreck-removal exercise by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is a welcome development and I commend the DG, Dr. Bashir Jamoh, for the initiative. I also salute the Hon. Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, for his necessary support.
The outcome of a well-articulated wreck removal with attributable benefits will enhance our dignity in comity of maritime nations.
As the chairman of the ministerial technical committee of the second attempt of wreck removal (2001), I will advise that reference be made to previous reports and the outcome of the exercise, should there be lessons for improvement.
In addition and based on the minister’s support, I will further advise that reference be made to UNCLOS, IMO and the national provisions on wrecks, to develop a national guideline on wrecks.
This document should focus on administration, control and prevention of wrecks in our waters. Our waterways should not continue to be burial ground for vessels after their useful life.
Let me congratulate the DG for inviting the MDs of NPA and probably NIWA for the exercise. The two authorities are statutorily assistant wreck-removers by virtue of their statutory responsibilities and functions.
