Listen: How NPA, Customs, others can deal with cargo transit issues – Iheanacho
On this edition of “Maritime Reality Check,” the Chairman/CEO of Integrated Oil and Gas Company Ltd., Captain Emmanuel Iheanacho, joins in our discussion sharing thoughts and giving insights on the impact of port regulatory intervention on cargo transit efficiency.
We talk about the continued challenge of the perennial clogging of the port access roads, particularly around the Tin-Can Island Port area, as several factors including container degrouping along the port corridors; an act that presents total chaos.
At the heart of the conversation is what the Nigerian Ports Authority(NPA), the Nigeria Customs Service, and the State Ministry of Transport should be doing to address the challenges that make it very difficult to move containers from the port to different locations.
Iheanacho emphasizes the need for set rules and standards that should guide operations, whereby defiance would attract sanctions.
Speaking on the need for having “marshalling areas”, Capt. Iheanacho says that Nigeria could check out what obtains in other ports where it had worked and support efficient port operations, and take a cue.
He talks on proper regulations, good organisation and enforcement as well as touching on the importance of being seen and known for nice and hospitable ports, if the nation desires to become a hub in sub-region for port services.
Iheanacho; who is also the CEO of Genesis Worldwide Shipping Company, advises on the appropriate use of the Internal Container Deports(ICDs), which should serve as a relief for the ports, where containers are moved to for clearance by the customs service, so that they don’t dwell in the ports and make it difficult for new containers to be received from ships.
