Amaechi inspects Seme-Karke Joint Border Post in Cotonoue

The  Honourable Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi(Middle) with
the Customs Area Controller, Mohammed Uba, during the minister’s inspection tour of the JBP
The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, inspected the Seme-Karke
Joint Border Post(JBP) in Cotonoue  ahead
of the Thursday’s meeting of Ministers of Transport, Infrastructure and Health
of Benin Republic, Ghana, Nigeria, Togo and Cote D’Ivore which held in
Cotonoue, Benin Republic.

He carried out the inspection in line with the responsibility of the
Federal
Ministry of Transportation as Nigeria’s Focal point, which doubles as
the Chair of the Joint Border Post Management Committee as provided in the Act
setting up the JBP. 
The Ministry is also responsible for the maintenance of the
facility.
Contained in a statement by Special Assistant to the Minister, Israel
Ibeleme, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) with the
support of the European Union (EU) established the Joint Border Post for
reasons of trade facilitation.
A remarkable point of the provisions of the JBP is to ensure removal of
all checkpoints hindering trade facilitation along the Badagry-Seme border
areas to enable free movement of people and trade in line with the relevant
ECOWAS Protocols acceded to by ECOWAS Heads of States and Government.
According to the statement, “Federal Ministry of Transportation
is Nigeria’s Focal point and doubles as the Chair of the Joint Border Post
Management Committee in line with the Act setting up the JBP. The Ministry is also
responsible for the maintenance of the facility.
For Benin Republic, its own focal point is the
Ministry of Finance.
The statement also mentioned that “Operations at the JBP are
carried out by select Border Agencies of both countries working with
sub-committees which constitute a management committee of operatives chaired by
the Customs Services of the two countries.         
                 
The Republic of Benin and Federal Republic of Nigeria as stipulated by
the ECOWAS Act, have the responsibility of overseeing the general
administration of Joint the border post.
Upon the handing over of the Facility to the two countries , the
maintenance of facility , operations of the Joint border post, provision and
maintenance of JBP operational and administrative equipment became their
responsibility
, the statement reads.
