What NIMASA must do now to remain relevant- Mariner

Rear Admiral Godwill Ombo(rtd.), the Deputy
Secretary-General of the Society of Nigerian Mariners (SNM), weekend said the
Nigerian Maritime
Administration and Safety  Agency (NIMASA) must have its staff
audit, to ensure effective service delivery.

Ombo, in an interview in Lagos, said the new
Director-General of NIMASA, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, should ensure departmental
audit in view of performance and relevance to the agency.

A former Flag Officer Commanding, Naval Training, Ombo
said that while the initiative would check redundancy, the agency should also
embark on staff capacity building through relevant training.

“NIMASA must do an audit of its staff now, so end
redundancies.

“The new DG should also gear his focus on training
programmes for the staff,  to build their
capacity for the job because maritime business is a global one and the
standards of operation must be the same,” Ombo said.

Speaking on sea time training for Nigerian cadets,
Ombo said the government, through NIMASA, should put to productive use the
transporter, MV HORTEN, abandoned on the marina waters.

He said MV HORTEN could be used for training 135
cadets for sea time.
“MV HORTEN can serve the need for sea time training
for 135 cadets, for their requisite maritime experience.

“Our cadets study in Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron
and other schools at home and abroad. This vessel will help to make their
training complete and they can get jobs on any vessel around the world.”
