The
Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Col Hameed Ali has
been summoned by the Senate ad hoc Committee on Rice Waivers to come and
explain his reasons for lifting the ban placed on importation of rice through
the land borders.
The
summon followed a motion raised by
Senator Adamu Aliero (APC, Kebbi) who decried the decision by the
comptroller-general.
Aliero described the action of the customs boss as capable of undermining local
production of rice in the country.
Besides,
the Senator argued that the customs boss does not have the unilateral power to
lift the ban placed by the administration of former President Goodluck
Jonathan.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, who agreed with the motion, said such policy
reversal would mean an illusion for local producers of rice.
