Association seeks creation of Ministry of Maritime Services

National President, ANLCA, Olayiwola Shittu.

The Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents
(ANLCA) on Thursday called for the creation of the Ministry of Maritime
Services from the Federal Ministry of Transport.

Mr
Olayiwola Shittu, the National President of the association, who made the call
in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, said the
Federal Ministry of Transport had been saddled with so many responsibilities.
He
said the establishment of the ministry of maritime services would provide
opportunities to harness the potentials of the maritime industry.
“If
government really wants to harness maritime, probably we need to have the
Ministry of Maritime Services because the Ministry of Transport now, is saddled
with so much jobs.
“You
have the railway; they need to think of transport policy by road.
“Even
though works; Ministry of Works has taken part of the job from transport as
regards roads but by the time you saddle them with NIMASA, Railway, Shippers’
Council; in all sphere, they need to unbundle that ministry of transport.
“That
will be the first step to show confidence that the maritime industry can
sustain our economy. ‘’
Shittu
also urged the government to give bank guarantees to indigenous ship owners to
facilitate purchase of vessels and their participation in coastal trade (Cabotage).
According
to him, the Federal Government should support those who are vast in shipping,
let them form a consortium and start having vessels.
