The National
Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF) has condemned
what it describes as the deliberate underfunding of the Nigeria Customs Service
(NCS) by the Federal Ministry of Finance. It also called for a partial autonomy
of the service, to enable it meet its responsibilities.

In a letter
with ref: NAGAFF/HQ/101/36 dated August 5, 2014, addressed to President
Goodluck Jonathan, the association said the underfunding of the Nigeria Customs
Service(NCS) had affected the Service in its core function of trade facilitation , in addition to increasing
its security watch on the nation’s borders.

NAGAFF said that
“We have observed from our strategic point as critical stakeholders that at the
moment, it is apparent that the Nigeria Customs Service is being under-funded,
which may be currently affecting its operations and freight forwarding
business.”

The letter,
signed by its founder, Boniface Aniebonam, reads that its understanding of the
President Jonathan’s transformation agenda implies a genuine desire to usher in
development and prosperity to the Nigerian people.
