The Alumni of Maritime Academy of Nigeria Oron (AMANO)Akwa Ibom, has been granted an observer status at the Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control for West and Central African Region (Abuja MoU).
Disclosed in a statement by the AMANO Publicity Secretary, Mr. Oamien Ailemen, the association would be able to participate and contribute to the efforts of the Abuja MoU in eradicating substandard ships within the region covering West and Central African states.
“We are delighted to share that our dear alumni was granted observer status by the council of Ministers following a recommendation by the Port State committee meeting held between 10th and 13th September 2024 in Congo Brazzaville.
“The approval came following an application put forward by AMANO before the committee which was deliberated and approved.
“With its mission to contribute towards excellence in the maritime sector through capacity development within the maritime sector, this status will bring AMANO into the mainstream of developing and promoting capacity and aligning programs towards common goals,” the statement reads in part.
AMANO also disclosed that the Regional Maritime University, Ghana, and the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Akwa Ibom, were equally approved as observers at the Abuja MoU.
The President of the AMANO Mr. Emmanuel Maiguwa, expressed satisfaction with the new development and commended the progress and programmes of the MoU, especially under the leadership of Capt. Sunday Umoren.
He noted that Capt. Umoren has shown remarkable commitment under the Abuja MoU in developing the capacity of member states, and developing ethics of Port State inspectors.
Maiguwa expressed AMANO’s commitment to the course of the Abuja MoU’s mission and programmes.
