NPCC worry over unmanned level-crossing on Dockyard Road

The Nigerian Ports Consultative Council (NPCC) has expressed concerns over a dangerous unmanned level crossing along Dockyard Road, near the Navy and Nigerian Ports Authority, Apapa.

The council highlighted the absence of a keeper and barrier at the crossing, posing significant safety risks to commuters and port users.

During a visit to the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr. Freeborn Okhiria, in Lagos, NPCC Chairman Mr. Bolaji Sunmola emphasized the need to address logistical challenges through stronger collaboration between the NPCC and NRC.

He stressed that an improved partnership would enhance transport connectivity between Nigeria’s rail and maritime sectors.

However, the lack of safety measures at the level crossing along Dockyard Road was a key issue discussed during the meeting.

NPCC member Captain Emmanuel Ebubeogu expressed alarm over the situation, urging immediate intervention. “I get ‘goose pimples’ whenever I pass there,” he said, pointing to the potential dangers posed by the removal of safety features due to modernization.

In response, the NRC, represented by Director of Operations Mr. Akin Osinowo, acknowledged the safety concerns and called for the NPCC’s support in expanding and modernizing the rail infrastructure.

He also highlighted efforts to commercialize underutilized rail facilities in collaboration with the Lagos State Government.

Both parties agreed on the need to enhance safety and efficiency within Nigeria’s transport systems, particularly in the critical port areas.
