Staffers of Radio Nigeria embarked on a nation wide peaceful protest tagged “Black Monday.”
They all wore black attires and downed tools for two hours between 10am and Noon.
They were protesting the lack of modern broadcast equipment, work tools and unconducive work environment.
In Lagos, the Acting Chairman of the three in house Unions, Mr. Fabian Anawo who addressed a World News Conference said that the protest was to draw the attention of the Federal Government to the state of their broadcast equipment.
He said that “our transmitters are not only obsolete, they are not functioning well.
“On a daily basis we have break in transmission by being off air up to six on more times.
He said that Radio Nigeria being a public service station should be well funded for the benefit of all.
He appealed to the Federal Government to draft a supplementary budget to address the decayed infrastructure in the establishment.
The Director Lagos Operations of the establishment, Prince Adeyika Amosu who addressed the protesting staff thanked them for being civil and peaceful with the protest.
Prince Amosu said that the Minister of Information had already sent a stiff bill to the government concerning the state of infrastructure of the organization nation wide.
According to him, he was confident that all the issues raised by the Unions would be addressed because they are issues that bordered on critical operations of the Corporation.
” You are not asking for personal or selfish things, your demands are genuine and based on how to better reposition Radio Nigeria, they are legitimate demands and I assure you that they will be addresses by management,” he said.
After the protest the workers went back to their duty posts.
