NIWA Zone ‘B’ to sanitise dredging, inland waterways operations

Mr Istafanus Malwi, General Manager  NIWA Zone ‘B’

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA)
Zone ‘B’ will soon begin strict enforcement of regulations to ensure dredging operators’
compliance with best practices for the benefit of the environment.

Mr Istafanus Malgwi, the General Manager
Zone ‘B’ comprising West, Delta, Anambra and Edo States, made the disclosure
during the recent stakeholders meeting with dredgers association in Lagos.

He commended the initiative by the Lagos
Area Office for creating a synergy between the Authority and the operators in
the dredging sector.

He said the stakeholders meeting was
necessary to enable operators understand the power of NIWA in regulating the
activities of the coastal waters operations.

“First, I commend the Lagos Area Manager
for creating this kind of synergy between the Authority and the operators in
the dredging sector, we have water users(boat operators) and then the dredgers’
association.

“They are all vital in the operation of
the authority generally, and as part of our regulatory function, this stakeholders
meeting is timely.

 “This
is because the operators need to know that NIWA has absolute control on the use
of the inland waterways nation-wide, if not, they will not comply.

 “That
is why NIWA deemed it fit to issue operational guidelines. And with that, they
too will realise that NIWA has a major role to play in this sector,” he said.

Malgwi was hopeful that the interaction
would enable people to begin to realise and key into the necessary things that
is expected of them in the course of their operations.

Speaking on how the same forum could be
convened in his zone, Malgwi said : “I have seen it all myself, with the view
to replicating same in Onitsha, Asaba, so that people from the eastern zone can
benefit from it.”
